Installing and running the Cisco VPN Client (Windows Vista/7)
  Question
Installing and running the Cisco VPN Client (Windows Vista/7)
  Answer

Before downloading the Cisco VPN Client for Windows Vista/7, it is critical that you review the following information.

There are several known issues that will prevent this application from being installed on some computers. If it is properly installed, you will still need to download, install, and import a configuration file separately. Finally, if you are using any networking hardware that uses Network Address Translation (NAT), you may be required to update the hardware's firmware in order to be able to successfully use the VPN client.

Due to the potential complications inherent with this installation, Bruin OnLine recommends that you use the built-in PPTP. Instructions for configuring PPTP are located here:

Downloading and installing VPN Client

Please be advised that per Cisco's release notes for this version of the VPN client (5.0.06):

"The Cisco VPN Client does not support the following:"
  • Systems upgraded from Windows XP (clean OS installation required)
  • 64-bit support
  • Integrated Firewall
  • InstallShield

If you are certain your computer is supported, you may proceed to the link below to download and install the VPN Client.

Downloading and installing .pcf file

You will have to download and extract/unzip the configuration file, UCLAVPN.pcf separately and import it into the VPN Client in order to successfully authenticate with the UCLA Network. You may download UCLAVPN.pcf from the link below.

Importing .pcf file

In order to authenticate with the UCLA network, you will need to import the UCLA settings files. To import, please do the following:

  1. Launch the Cisco VPN Client from your Start > Programs menu.
  2. Click on the Connection Entries tab.
  3. Click on the Import Icon.
  4. Browse for and select the UCLA VPN.pcf file that you previously downloaded from the BOL website.
Please be sure to either save or print these instructions to insure that you properly install and configure Cisco VPN Client for Windows Vista.
You may now download and install:
